Make Your Financials Work for You & Your Nonprofit (210.0914.A.411)

In an environment of ever-increasing public scrutiny and competition for scarce resources, it is essential for the nonprofit manager (and board) to understand the various financial statements available. This awareness will help to ensure the organization's funds are effectively managed and producing maximum outcomes.

Through this training, participants will:
  • understand key accounting terms and concepts as they relate to nonprofit work and specific organizations
  • learn to interpret financial statements including the Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Activities, Budget, and Cash Flow
  • practice using financial statements to assess an organization's strengths and weaknesses
  • learn to communicate with outside parties (including foundations) through financial statements and the 990 federal tax return
Each participant should bring two copies of each of the following to use as reference during the class period:
  • Statement of Financial Position (Balance Sheet) and Statement of Financial Activities (Profit & Loss) prepared internally OR Audited Financial Statement for the most recent completed fiscal year
  • Annual budget (detailed if available) for current fiscal year
