Resources: Board Development

The National Center for Nonprofit Boards (NCNB) has identified
five basic assumptions with respect to boards of directors:

  1. There is no generic model of board size, composition or organization that works for all circumstance.
  2. Board and board members roles, duties, and responsibilities are fundamentally the same for all organizations
  3. How boards and board members actually fulfill their responsibilities will vary
  4. All organizations will undergo one or more metamorphoses over time
  5. Boards and board members begin to reach their optimum levels of performance when they exercise their responsibilities via asking good questions

There are several factors which play an important role in the development of an organization's board:
  • Age

  • Developmental level

  • Historic patterns and dynamics (culture)

  • Members experience and sophistication

  • Future direction
