transparent Nonprofit Formation: How CRC Can Support You

Applying for nonprofit status can be a daunting task if you are not clear about the process or how to complete the required forms. However, the fact is, with some explanation and oversight, you can be successful in getting 501(c)(3) status without driving yourself insane. There are several ways in which the Community Resource Center can help:

Nonprofit Start-up Training
The Community Resource Center offers four classes a year on how to successfully start and manage a nonprofit organization. The class is made up of two 3 hour courses held on the same day. The morning portion (from 9am to 12pm) goes over basic information needed to manage a nonprofit organization. We touch on legal obligations, financial management, fundraising, evaluation, and board development. In the afternoon session (from 1pm-4pm) we guide you through the process of obtaining 501(c)(3) status including a question-by-question description of how to fill out the IRS application (form 1023). Although we highly recommend that you take both of these classes together, you can take them separately. The cost of each session is $60.

If you attend these classes, you can purchase post workshop application review for an additional $75. These services include reviewing your articles of incorporation, by-laws, and the 1023 application to the IRS. A written description of recommendations to improve your documents will be mailed or emailed to you. In the unlikely case that you require a meeting to go over your application, an additional $100/hr will be charged.

Nonprofit Start-up Consulting
Many people don’t want to wait for a class. They’re interested in getting their nonprofit off the ground as soon as possible. For the cost of $250*, the Community Resource Center will provide consulting services to assist you in moving through the 501 (c)(3) application process. Services include:

  • A 1-2 hour meeting to go over your organization’s purpose and opportunity, the process you will need to follow to obtain 501 (c)(3) status from the IRS, and a detailed explanation of how to fill out the IRS’s nonprofit application (1023 form)
  • A review of documents such as articles of incorporation, by-laws, and the 1023 application and a written set of recommendations for improvement
  • Answer questions regarding technical needs to incorporate with the Secretary of State, apply for an Employer Identification Number, and/or correspond with the IRS

In the unlikely case that you require an additional meeting to go over your application, an additional $100/hr will be charged.

If you have already completed your 1023 application and are not in need of any direct consultation, CRC can review it and send you suggested recommendations for improvement for $100.

Nonprofit Application Completion Services
There are occasions when individuals do not want to assume the burden of filling out forms and budget sheets in order to start their nonprofit organization. For $1,000 (not including the $50 to incorporate in Colorado nor the $500 to apply for nonprofit status with the IRS) the Community Resource Center can write and submit the following documents needed to obtain nonprofit status in the State of Colorado:

• Articles of Incorporation;
• Incorporating your organization in the State of Colorado;
• Employer Identification Number Application;
• The IRS 1023 form (application for 501 (c)(3) status).

We will also assist in answering any questions the IRS may have regarding your application.

Through a brief questionnaire and ongoing correspondence, CRC will gather the information to complete and submit these forms for your organization.
