I. About the Community Resource Center

The Community Resource Center (CRC) is a nonprofit organization, established in 1981, to provide leadership training, technical assistance, and consultation to community-based organizations in Colorado. CRC provides training and technical support in the areas of nonprofit leadership and management, organizational development, strategic planning, board and constituency development, community organizing, fundraising, and grant writing. CRC offers a variety of services, including conferences and workshops, individual consultation, group facilitation, organizational evaluation, board and staff retreats, leadership training, coaching, grant proposal reviews, and The Colorado Grants Guide.

CRC provides capacity building services exclusively to nonprofit organizations. We have extensive experience working in the nonprofit sector and know the challenges Colorado nonprofits often face in seeking to fulfill their missions. More than 2,500 Colorado nonprofit organizations and community groups typically use CRC services each year.

The Community Resource Center is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, ethnicity, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender expression, disability, veteran status, or marital status.

II. Internship Responsibilities:

Doing hands-on volunteering in a direct service nonprofit can be a very different experience than doing the “business” of running a nonprofit. Both experiences play a critical role in the success of the nonprofit sector. This internship will help emerging leaders establish a foundation of knowledge in key areas of excellence in nonprofit operations: research, and evaluation. Interns will gain valuable team project experience as well as have the opportunity to influence and implement some individual projects within their program areas.

Interns at CRC can expect to build specific skills in the following areas:

  • Increase planning, organizational and time management skills
  • Learn project design, management, and delivery
  • Increase knowledge of nonprofit-specific technology tools
  • Develop team-based work competencies
  • Familiarity with salesforce.com, guidestar.org, constantcontact.com, and surveymonkey.com

III. Projects and Responsibilities:

Research and Evaluation

Research and Evaluation interns can expect to make substantive contributions to the mission and work of the Community Resource Center. In independent and team-based projects, interns advance our mission through:

  • Implementing evaluation strategy, identifying participants, managing responses, doing initial data assessment and making preliminary recommendations regarding specific CRC programs such as Coaching, Leadership, Rural Philanthropy Days and Consulting
  • Research on Colorado and national funders, to complete the 2011-2012 edition of The Colorado Grants Guide
  • Substantive research projects for potential statewide release, regarding topics such as best practices in rural fundraising

PR & Communication

The PR & Communication intern will support the mission and work of the Community Resource Center by advancing our public visibility across a variety of traditional and new media mechanisms.

  • Development and distribution of CRC’s press releases
  • Strategy and implementation assistance with CRC blog, websites, and social marketing/outreach initiatives
  • Assist with creation and update of CRC Style guide
  • Assist with development and design for the Colorado Grants Guide
  • Development of new copy for public distribution, specifically for on marketing and statewide outreach

IV. Qualifications:

Rising college juniors and seniors from all majors, as well as first- and second year Masters students in a field related to social sciences. Recent Bachelors and Masters degree recipients and exceptional rising sophomores may also be considered.

  • A “B” average (3.0GPA) is required
  • A desire to serve the nonprofit sector in some significant capacity after graduation
  • Some familiarity with your preferred program area is strongly preferred
  • Excellent time management and project management skills
  • The ability to work on several different projects concurrently
  • The ability to meet deadlines on time or early
  • Excellent writing and information analysis skills
  • A good sense of humor and the ability to get along with many types of leaders
  • Ability to be flexible with CRC’s changing needs, such as the occasional support of daytime classes
  • A high comfort level with web-based communication and web-based programs such as Constant Contact, Salesforce, Guidestar, and SurveyMonkey
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Office, Excel, and PowerPoint required; proficiency in MS Access and Visio optional but preferred

V. Program Incentives and Compensation

Although this internship is unpaid, we are able to work with our interns and his/her school(s) to assist the individual in receiving college credit. We will also be happy to provide this as an opportunity to fulfill volunteer requirements for particular scholarship or loan forgiveness programs. The Community Resource Center offers many opportunities to increase your knowledge of nonprofit management, personal development, and professional skills. This will not only benefit your growth at CRC but with your entire future.

1. The primary incentive in this program is the opportunity to investigate a career opportunity in the nonprofit sector with hands-on experience prior to graduation. Once completed, the intern will have sufficient knowledge necessary to determine if a career in the nonprofit sector, or in an internal leadership role at a nonprofit, is the right opportunity to pursue.

2. Each intern will be participating in specific projects that have a direct impact on our ability to deliver our services and fulfill our mission across Colorado.

3. Each intern will work closely with your supervisor to develop the details of your project assignments and then effectively manage them within the organization.

4. Each intern will be interacting with a variety of professional and generational styles, thereby giving you the opportunity to learn more about which workplace styles you prefer and which are more challenging

5. Interns may be eligible for class credit. CRC has worked with both Metro State and Regis University to help students meet volunteer or class credit requirements.

6. Interns may also take advantage of the opportunity to participate in specific CRC-led trainings and workshops during the period of their service and for the three months following the conclusion of their internship.

VI. Work Schedule

Interns should expect to spend a minimum of 12 hours per week in our local office. Depending on project work plan and each intern's performance, some aspects of certain projects may be done off-site. Our office is located at 444 Sherman (Speer & Sherman) and accessible by public transit. There is also free parking available for CRC visitors.

Orientation for new interns will begin on Tuesday June 15.  The ending date will be Friday August 20, although both the starting and ending date may be flexible to accommodate interns’ academic schedules and requirements.
